Plant pathology is critical to the world’s food and fibre production systems. Alongside related research such as agronomy, physiology and plant improvement programs, plant pathology is typically funded through Research and Development Corporations (RDCs) associated with levies raised from specific commodities. For example, Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funds research from grains production, Sugar Research Australia (SRA) from sugarcane, Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA) from horticultural produce such as citrus and banana. Additionally, Australian international agricultural research is funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). There are significant differences in funding models and processes governing funding for plant pathology research, but these all need to be navigated in order to secure the funding required to ensure food security in the face of a changing climate. This presentation explores the different funding models, identifies gaps, and hopes to resolve the question of “Where’s the funding?”
